LDS Missionaries are encouraged to take photos on their mission for remembrances. They are not encouraged to be a tourist and take photos of everything all the time. It is useful for Mormon missionaries to have a camera that is simple, compact, lightweight, durable, good battery power and easy to store and carry. Missionaries will be taking photos of P-Day events and at other times. They will also want to take photos of their companions (the ones that they like) and the investigators and members that they work with. Carrying a bulky camera to the mission field does not makes sense.
On my mission, we would develop our photos once a month or so and store the negatives. This was an absolute pain. Missionaries now are better suited taking a nice digital camera with them and storing their photos on a thumb drive. I would recommend taking two thumb drives, one for backup. We would recommend a camera that has a large internal digital storage so that photos do not have to be moved to a thumb drive that often.
These cameras are compact, effective, sharp with high storage capacity and durability. Your best best is probably to buy one of these digital cameras prior to entering the MTC.
